About Diversified Communications media awareness and media skills development Although the entire business world, in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors, persistently requires direct and indirect interaction with the media, the overwhelming majority of professionals and organizations never receive the sort of comprehensive media awareness and media skills development training which plays a critical role in generating successes—and in averting the communications crises which ruin endeavors every year. Even more unfortunately, the small few people and groups who are “trained” to deal with the media are trained very poorly. Generally, such “training” involves placing spokespersons and senior executives in a series of mock interviews without providing crucial meta-knowledge and foundational information. Without exception, this leaves a client seriously vulnerable to unexpected circumstances, questions, and attacks. At Diversified, we work with our clients actively (individually, in small groups, or in larger talks) to ensure that each client understands the media, has a sense of how the media operates, and is aware of ‘why they do what they do’. That’s why Diversified Communications stresses media awareness before beginning to talk about media “training”—or, as we prefer to call it, media skills development. With a firm understanding of the media in place, Diversified then guides its clients, in extensive multi-day programs, or ongoing private coaching, to begin to develop the tangibles: confidence, message clarity and consistency, effective body language and other non-verbal signals, message delivery, and so forth.
